The Adventure Theatre of Montgomery County, Maryland has a record of generating new plays by a wide range of authors that would be hard to match by any theatre, anywhere. To tell its history, through the six plays in this collection, is to encapsulate in no small part the development of children's theatre in America over the last 40 years.
The plays represented here, written between 1955 and 1985, reflect the best of our beginnings and the widening scope and sophistication of plays for young audiences. Two of our authors, Helen Avery and Flora Atkin, are already well known to New Plays customers and this collection will introduce you to four more.
You can read about Twelve Dancing Princesses, The Purple Fan, Golliwhoppers!, The Cricket on the Hearth, and A Stone That Sings on other pages of this catalog. The collection also includes Rikki Tikki Tavi, Edward Tamulevich's adaptation of the Rudyard Kipling's story combining puppets and people. By buying the anthology, you have in one volume a handsome collection reflecting the personality and diversity of an important American children's theatre. The plays combine popular themes and titles, good writing, and skillful use of the theatre's rich resources. A good choice as a text for children's theatre classes, because of the range and variety of the plays included--and a good book to keep on hand for the play selection committee.
