A Stone That Sings
by Irene Elliott
A Choose-Your-Own-Plot musical fantasy. 3 women, 2 men. 50 minutes to an hour. $ 6.50
In the popular "Choose Your Own Adventure" title, a single novel has dozens of plots, often leading in very different directions. At an exciting juncture, the reader is asked, "What would you do?" and turns the pages accordingly. This idea--the ultimate in audience participation--has now been adapted to the stage. A Stone That Sings offers a series of plot choices that add up to eight different scenarios. With songs to go with each!
Fun, but more than a good gimmick. The adventures are ingenious and satisfying, the characters are appealing, and the quest is filled with metaphor that is intriguing without ever becoming heavy-handed. Theatres with their own sense of adventure (it takes courage!) will be able, with this play, to offer their audiences something exciting and truly new in children's theatre.
