It would be pleasant to believe that a "metaphorical show about the arms race," as Mary Hall Surface describes Round Pegs, Square Pegs, has become obsolescent in a world without a Cold War. Pleasant, but unrealistic. Aggression still looms large at every level--among families, in schools, within and between nations. A play about the peaceful resolution of conflict that shows young people as active agents of change is still vital and pertinent.

Small Round and Small Square begin as players in a deadly game in a world divided between Round and Square. They learn from the "Bigs" that their own side is RIGHT, the other side evil. But pushed together on their own, they begin to drawn their own conclusions. The subject is global domination, but a spirit of free flowing fantasy runs through the play, lightening its dark shadows and offering performers opportunities for improvisation and gaiety.
